Be it promoting CBD brands or starting entire CBD companies, the celebrity CBD bandwagon is overflowing. We ask…is this a good thing? While there is certainly nothing wrong with a celebrity sharing their positive experiences with CBD, a product endorsement from someone famous shouldn’t be a deciding factor when you’re looking for safe and effective products to try.

Martha Stewart, John Legend, Whoopi Goldberg and Willie Nelson are just a few of the many celebrities who have gotten involved in the CBD oil industry and who are looking to stake out their own piece of the ever-growing CBD pie. But here at Sinplicity we’re more concerned with quality products than who’s behind an endorsement. Hopefully this article will help you separate fact from fiction, as well as providing insight into what you should take into consideration when evaluating those CBD oils, tinctures, gummies, creams, etc. which have been endorsed by celebrities.

Big Name CBD Celebrity Testimonials

So what’s the potential problem with celebrity CBD brands and/or endorsements? Well, celebrities aren’t typically CBD experts. It is pretty common for celebrities to jump on bandwagons, so it’s hardly a surprise that many are finding ways to capitalize on the billion-dollar plus CBD industry. Issues arise when celebrities / influencers are simply parroting the claims put forth by a CBD company’s marketing team without any first-hand knowledge of how and why CBD is helpful. If Kim Jones from the Acme CBD company tells you how great their products are you probably won’t give it a second thought, but if Kim Kardashian suddenly repeats those same words they somehow carry more weight?

In addition to those already mentioned, there are quite a few other celebrities who have shared CBD testimonials and partnered up with CBD companies, among them:

  • Beyoncé
    • Beyoncé says she discovered CBD on her last tour and has experienced its benefits for soreness and inflammation, as well as the restless nights and agitation that comes from not being able to fall asleep. She recently announced that she is building a cannabis and hemp farm to obtain her own CBD.
  • Morgan Freeman
    • After recovering from a car accident in 2008 that was nearly fatal he developed fibromyalgia and takes CBD to deal with the effects of the disorder, which can cause widespread pain, fatigue, mood and memory issues.
  • Busy Philips
    • American actress who appeared in a number of hit TV shows in the last several decades has been open about her struggles with anxiety throughout her life. Phillips uses CBD alongside acupuncture, exercise, and an infrared sauna to help manage her anxiety and mental health.
  • Alessandro Ambrosio
    • A long-time Victoria’s Secret model and proponent of the powers of CBD to help calm her anxious mind before sleep. CBD is believed to help improve sleep quality and help you fall asleep faster, so celebrities with insomnia and other sleep disorders rely it nightly.
  • Tommy Chong
    • A long-time cannabis advocate, it might not surprise you to find this half of the Cheech and Chong duo on our list of celebrities that love CBD. Chong has used CBD to help him in his fight against prostate cancer and even has his own line of medical cannabis and CBD products.
  •  Jennifer Aniston
    • Known and loved around the world as a result of her role as Rachel Green on Friends, Jennifer has said that she uses CBD regularly for pain, stress, and anxiety.
  • Michael J. Fox
    • Michael J. Fox is a strong advocate for CBD products and their medicinal benefits. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease at the age of 29, Fox launched the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in 2000. He uses CBD to help manage this condition characterized by shaking limbs, slow movement, and a loss of balance, among other things. The Michael J. Fox Foundation advocates that cannabis be reclassified in order to make it easier to conduct research about the plant’s potential medicinal effects.
  • Kristen Bell
    • There are few actresses out there who are as open about mental health as Kristen Bell. She frequently opens up to her followers on Instagram about her own experiences with anxiety and depression. Bell takes a dropper full of CBD oil every day as part of her routine. She asserts that it’s an important part of her overall wellness, along with therapy and exercise.

Celebrity CBD Scams
Celebrity CBD Hoax

While the celebrities above openly support CBD products and brands, there are quite a few fake celebrity endorsements floating around the internet. The following celebrities (among others) have not officially endorsed CBD in any manner, but have been falsely portrayed as advocates:

  • Tom Hanks
  • Clint Eastwood
  • Dr. Oz
  • Dr. Phil
  • Blake Shelton
  • Sir David Attenborough
  • Russell Brand

In addition to the celebrities above, one of the more widespread internet CBD scams / hoaxes involves the popular TV show “Shark Tank”. Many less than scrupulous CBD companies have falsely claimed that their product was featured on the show, with some going as far as claiming to have secured a deal with one of the “sharks”. In fact, no CBD product has ever been presented on Shark Tank. If a CBD brand mentions being featured on the show you are most certainly being scammed.

A Few CBD Claims to Avoid
Free CBD Scam

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with using influence to spread awareness about the benefits of CBD. In fact, the more people who know about CBD and what it can do for them, the better. However, suspect claims can easily develop when celebrities are getting paid to lend support, and there are some claims that should always trigger your internal alarms when you see them.

Just because a celebrity is endorsing or selling a product doesn’t mean that their CBD claims aren’t true. But there are some claims that should raise a red flag for you. Here are a few:

  • Free products. Many celebrity-backed CBD companies will offer you a free product to try. Though it may sound like a great deal, it’s usually just a way to rope in unsuspecting consumers. A lot of the time, these “free” products are tied to a recurring subscription, meaning you’ll continue getting (and paying for) CBD products that you didn’t specifically order.
  • International sourcing. See a celebrity endorsing a product made in China or Indonesia? Skip it. CBD products from these areas are popular with celebs, but they don’t have organic ingredients and they aren’t held to the same strict production rules used by companies in the U.S. and Canada.
  • Unclear labeling. It’s important to look at the label of a CBD product instead of just taking a celebrity’s claim that it’s safe to use. There are a lot of dishonest labeling practices out there, and they’re not always easy to spot. Most mislabeling techniques manifest as omissions such as not telling you where the hemp was grown, or how many milligrams of CBD are in the product. Reputable CBD companies will have Certificates of Analysis (i.e. lab reports) readily available on their website for you to view PRIOR to making a purchase. If these details aren’t included, don’t buy the product.

In Conclusion…

When it comes to the CBD products you take for mind and body wellness, it’s best to trust the experts — not the celebrities. In the largely unregulated CBD industry it’s easy to be swayed into purchasing inferior and/or overpriced products based on a celebrity’s endorsement. It’s important to do your homework to be certain that you’re buying quality CBD products at a fair price. The company behind a product is far more important than the face in front of it.
